Awards for Doctoral Students

The Faculty of Graduate Studies is seeking applications from doctoral students for three very significant awards and scholarships.


Call for applications from doctoral students for the following awards and scholarships:

Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program—Doctoral Scholarships provide support for individuals undertaking doctoral studies at Canadian universities.

  • Value: $35,000/year
  • Deadline to submit to Jill Calliou: October 31, 2013 (new deadline)

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships provide support for individuals undertaking doctoral studies at Canadian or foreign universities.

  • Value: $20,000/year
  • Deadline to submit to Jill Calliou: October 31, 2013 (new deadline)

The same application form can be used for both the Joseph-Armand Bombardier and the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships provide support for Canadian and international students undertaking doctoral studies at Canadian universities.

  • Value: $50,000 per year for three years
  • Deadline to submit to Jill Calliou: October 18, 2013 (deadline extended to allow applicants to attend the “Writing a SSHRC Grant” workshop on October 15).

The Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) at AU is responsible for coordinating the selection process for the applications, and for communicating the results to the applicants and agencies. The university selection committee will evaluate each application. Revisions may be recommended to the applicant by the committee to strengthen the proposal. The best applications will then be forwarded to SSHRC to meet the specific award deadlines.

FGS will be holding a webinar entitled “Writing a SSHRC Grant” on October 15, 11:00am to 1:00pm MT. Presenters will be Alain Ross May, Chad Saunders & Kam Jugdev. Check the FGS website for more information.
